The water hammer is a hydraulic phenomenon that occurs when a valve is suddenly opened or the flow of fluid moving inside the pipes is abruptly blocked. It is a negative phenomenon because it can damage the pipes and the mechanical part of the pump if the liquid strikes the walls violently.
