Quando si parla di cavitazione riferita alle pompe ci si riferisce al fenomeno che si verifica quando la pressione in un punto interno della pompa si abbassa facendo trasformare il liquido in stato gassoso (delle bolle, quindi delle cavità). Le bolle sono instabili e appena escono dalla zona di bassa pressione implodono creando delle vibrazioni che a lungo andare danneggiano il materiale o i componenti della pompa. Solitamente la struttura più esposta a questo fenomeno negativo è la girante.
